See the Nickel Plate Express from a whole new perspective with an unforgettable ride in the cab of one of our historic train engines. This behind-the-scenes experience gives guests a rare opportunity to ride alongside our engineer during a full-length Nickel Plate Express excursion.

Hear the engine, watch the railroad ahead unfold from the cab windows, and experience the sights and sounds of operating a historic locomotive up close. Guests ride in the lead engine both ways, giving them the unique opportunity to experience two historic engines during their excursion.

Cab riders should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure for a brief safety orientation, waiver signing, and preparation before boarding the locomotive. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and makes a great gift for Father’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, or any train enthusiast.

Cab Ride Experience (Ages 16+)

Ride in the cab for a full-length Nickel Plate Express excursion and enjoy a rare view of the railroad from the front of the train. Prices are per person and vary based on ride length.

This experience can accommodate up to two riders. If two guests plan to ride together, each person must have their own ticket.

Guests ages 16 and 17 must be accompanied by a ticketed parent or guardian.

Important Requirements

All cab riders must be physically able to:

• Walk on uneven surfaces between the train engines

• Climb the ladder into our F9 locomotive

• Follow all crew instructions throughout the experience

Because of the physical requirements of boarding and moving around the locomotive, this experience is not recommended for guests with mobility challenges.

Safety & Clothing Requirements

Proper clothing and personal protective equipment are required for all cab riders.

Guests must wear:

• Long pants

• Closed-toe shoes

Nickel Plate Express will provide:

• Safety vest

• Hearing protection

All riders must follow crew instructions at all times during the experience.

Can I take photos during the cab ride?

Yes. Guests are welcome to take photos during the experience as long as it does not interfere with safety instructions or crew operations.

Can two people ride together?

Yes. We can accommodate up to two cab riders on an excursion. Please note that each guest must purchase their own ticket.

Do I need to purchase a regular train ticket too?

No. A separate train ticket is not required. Your cab ride ticket covers your experience in the locomotive.

What should I wear?

All cab riders must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. A safety vest and hearing protection will be provided at check-in.

Is this experience refundable or transferable?

No. Cab ride tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.
