Back to Main Street
On August 30, 2018, a crowd gathered on Main Street in Arcadia.
It was 4:30 p.m., and a crowd lined Arcadia’s Main Street, spilling over into 5 de Mayo’s parking lot and huddling underneath Mane Attractions awning for shade. All eyes were fixed east, squinting into the sun, searching for a ‘Wide Load’ sign and glint of silver through the trees.
The crowd was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the first Nickel Plate Express Santa Fe car. Over the next four days, the town of Arcadia would see four cars and a locomotive unloaded on their Main Street. Each piece of equipment came from Lapel, traveling along 266th street and crossing SR 19 before making its way down Main Street to the waiting Nickel Plate tracks. Downtown Arcadia was the train’s first home in Hamilton County. During the four day span, every piece of equipment received a warm welcome and the Town of Arcadia and the Arcadia police department made sure that each move was smooth and safe.
Now, nearly a year after arriving in Arcadia, the Nickel Plate Express will return to Main Street for the Arcadia Spring Market on Main.
The Spring Market on Main is a celebration of the arts in Arcadia, and features dozens of vintage art vendors, food trucks, art projects and train rides. May 25 will mark the first time the train has boarded out of Arcadia since starting operations in September. The Nickel Plate Express will park on South Street, next to the historic train depot, and offer 30-minute minute train rides to festival goers, boarding at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30. Tickets can be purchased on site using cash or credit card.
